Salary Range: $160,000 - $200,000/Annualized, commensurate with education, experience and qualifications.

Essential Functions
Job Summary
As a staff AI Engineer on the UTSA MATRIX AI Augmenting Human Performance team, you will work closely with an interdisciplinary team of biomedical engineers, neurologists, trauma surgeons, and artificial intelligence researchers to develop AI/ML models that empower biomedical researchers and clinicians and improve clinical care.
Within a year, a goal is to develop AI/ML tools that help transform the care of trauma patients (including TBI and stroke) throughout the state of Texas as part of the new iRemedyACT project. Advances in AI to Improve Care for Trauma (ACT) is a state-of-the-art initiative to provide broadly accessible artificial intelligence tools and AI infrastructure in trauma and trauma care.
This position will join a strong cohort of researchers at the leading edge of artificial intelligence applied to the health sciences, fostered by close collaborations between UTSA and UTHSA Medical School. The UTSA MATRIX AI Consortium for Human Well-Being comprises >70 faculty, six departments, and >600 students, with a >$22M funding portfolio for AI research.
Core Responsibilities
• Develops, designs, and implements AI / ML solutions to handle and interpret clinical, biomedical, geospatial, and/or transportation-related data.
• Co-develops AI / ML solutions that are easily accessible and visually informative.
• Maintains version control and compatibility of programs.
• Presents AI / ML approaches in a readily explainable manner to a broad science and engineering audience.
• Disseminates AI / ML tools via publications, presentations, videos, code repositories and/or other user guides.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
• Ph.D. or Master's degree in Computer Science or related fields.
• Three or more (3+) years in designing, implementing, and training AI/ML models that have been successfully deployed commercially and/or otherwise demonstratively used by a non-technical audience.
• Experience in developing generative AI models for various data types (e.g., text, numeric, images, GIS data) is a significant advantage.
• Experience working with Python libraries including TensorFlow, PyTorch, pandas, and scikit-learn.
• Strong self-motivation and ability to work efficiently both independently and in collaboration with a broader interdisciplinary team.
• Demonstrated versatility in problem-solving.
• Knowledge of cloud database design (e.g., Google Cloud Platform, BigQuery) and database management a strong plus.
• Interest and ideally experience in working with biomedical and clinical data, and prediction of clinical outcomes.
• Passion for making a positive impact in society using AI.

• This is a grant-funded position, which may be extended or shortened based upon availability of grant funds and/or work.

Working Conditions
Working Environment:
• Office environment.

Physical Demands:
• Sedentary work; sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required, only occasionally.
• Exerts up to 10 lbs. of force occasionally.
This position will primarily work from a remote location and rarely needs to be on campus. When an employee is required to work on campus, travel and parking expenses are the employee's responsibility. Applicants must be adaptable and open to working in both environments.
