POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK:
This is a full-time, managerial position, and days of work and hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 pm. Note: This position is in the “NL” category of employment (non-fixed work week) and individuals in this role have no claim or entitlement to time off or cash compensation for hours worked beyond their normal schedule. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand. It is the policy of the College to grant hour for hour compensatory time off, with advance approval, only when employees are required to work on a regularly scheduled day off, Saturday, Sunday or a holiday. Time earned must be used within one fiscal year from the time it is earned.
JOB SUMMARY:
The Deans are responsible for strategic thinking, creatively and innovatively advancing the mission of the College as well as the overall operation of their respective School. As such, they are the overall academic leaders and administrators within their Schools and are of major importance to the College. The Deans report directly to the Provost/Vice President for Teaching, Learning and Growth. The Deans have both the authority and responsibility for planning, budgeting, scheduling, personnel matters, curriculum, instruction, development and other academic matters. They must ensure their School adheres to state of New Jersey and Ramapo College policies and procedures.
DUTIES:
Develops, articulates, and presents the vision for the School. Translates this vision into strategic goals by developing and implementing the School’s unit assessment plan that is aligned to the College’s mission and strategic planning objectives. Maintains effectiveness by working collegially with conveners and unit faculty to communicate expectations, ensure collaboration and successful implementation of School mission.
Coordinates in collaboration with the Provost, Vice Provost for Academic Affairs, fellow Deans of other Schools and other key Stakeholders to share best business practices and pursue continuous process improvements
Applies competencies to oversee the development, coordination and publication of the course schedules including adding and cancelling of classes. Provides oversight of faculty teaching load. Monitor deadlines to ensure a holistic schedule of classes to promote student completion.
Actively represents the unit and the College to students, parents, professional organizations, articulation partners, business and industry and other relevant constituencies.
Leads in the development of research initiatives, particularly those involving undergraduates in research and community engaged scholarship; support faculty in developing research agendas and sponsored research proposals.
Connect with local and regional leaders and College alumni in science, technology and healthcare to advance the School’s mission.
Strengthens the College’s commitment to diversity and inclusive excellence through the recruitment and retention of faculty, oversight of curricular and outreach efforts, and collaboration with faculty, students and staff in shifting institutional culture and practices as an emerging HSI.
Ensures documented School, program, and course assessment through development of learning objectives, appropriate strategies, and feedback to ensure academic excellence and integrity of programs.
Serves as representative of the School concerns and needs, communicating both individual and collective concerns to the Provost.
Mediates between students, faculty and parents in legal and appropriate ways. Facilitates the resolution of disagreement or conflict between faculty and students.
Supervises the administration of and ensures the academic quality of special programs, facilities, centers, or institutes assigned to the school.
Supervises the operation of labs, studios, computer facilities and other academic spaces assigned to the school.
Responsible for all fiscal matters at the School level. Plans for, requests, and disburses operational, travel, student fees, and other funds legally, responsibly, and fairly within given budget limitations.
Participates in College-wide strategic planning activities, especially as related to academic matters. Develops/reviews academic policies and may recommend on all-College policies and procedures
Actively participates in Deans Council meetings, initiatives, and activities.
Collaborates with Faculty Assembly and its leadership on College-wide academic issues
Supervises articulated and joint programs, as well as graduate programs offered by the School (Master’s in Nursing, Master’s in Data Science, Master’s in Applied Mathematics, Master’s in Computer Science).
Oversees School-wide grants and programs i.e. the Meadowlands Grant, College Bound/Upward Bound, and the McNair Program, and is responsible for the development, maintenance and programming of auxiliary entities i.e. the Sustainability Center, the STEM Center, etc.
REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE:
The successful candidate will possess a PhD or equivalent terminal degree and academic and scholarly accomplishments meriting appointment to the rank of Professor or Associate Professor with tenure in at lease one academic unit within the School. A minimum of five years of experience is preferred at the equivalent of the associate professor or full professor level in a higher education environment combining academic instruction and administration as determined by the Provost in consultation with the President.
