Salary Range: Up to $44,000 annualized, commensurate with education, experience and qualifications.

Essential Functions

 

Job Summary

 

This job has two split partial functions and is supported 100% by the funds in the Liu Lab of the Department of Chemistry, College of Science, The University of Texas at San Antonio. The first appointment is intended for one year, beginning as soon as possible, and renewable in future years, depending on the availability of the funds, previous years of performance, and mutual interest.

 

Core Responsibilities

 

Research Science Associate II (75%)

 

• Learns and practices molecular cloning, and site-directed mutation.

• Conducts cell culture for protein expression and purification.

• Performs enzyme activity assays and analyzes reaction products.

• Learns and practices enzyme kinetics.

• Learns and practices enzyme EPR and resonance Raman spectroscopies.

• Learns protein crystallization with and without a bound ligand.

• Presents research updates in the lab meetings and outside conferences upon selection or invitation.

• Summarizes significant findings in manuscripts for peer-reviewed publications.

Lab Managing Assistant Duty (25%)

 

• Daily checks of gas (N2. O2, H2, and He) and chemical supplies.

• Routinely (often daily on active research days) calibrates pH meters.

• Orders chemicals and consumable supplies other lab members submitted.

• Checks on receiving and following up on backorders.

• Assists Prof. Liu in preparing monthly reconciliation of card orders.

• Acts as a lab safety officer conducting daily bio- and chemical safety checks.

• Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

 

• Master's degree from an accredited institution in the field of assignment.

• One (1) year of related research experience post the highest degree earned in the relevant field.

• Experience assisting, ordering, and receiving supplies in a biochemistry or chemistry research laboratory.

• Solid training in biochemistry or chemistry with wet lab research experience.

• Desire to learn mechanistic enzymology and a whole new set of research techniques.

 

Preferred Qualifications

 

• Completion of courses leading to a Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Chemistry, or a closely related field.

This is a grant-funded position and is contingent upon additional grant funding.

Working Conditions

 

Working Environment:

 

• Laboratory environment.

• Exposure to potential occupational hazards including toxic, biological, and chemical hazards within certain laboratory spaces.

• Exposure to blood-borne pathogens.

• Exposure to biological hazards.

• Exposure to combustible materials.

• The ability to work safely with chemical disinfectants, handle some unpleasant elements, and tolerate normal odors/airborne particulate matter of a rodent facility is required.

• Ability to wear PPE including laboratory coat, disposable laboratory coat, face mask, eyes splash shield, face shield, eye protection, head cover, disposable gloves, sleeve covers, shoe covers, rubber boots, and N-95 respirator.

• May require travel off-campus and extended overnight stays.

 

Physical Demands:

 

• Ability to push, pull, or lift to 50 pounds with or without reasonable accommodations.

 

This position will be primarily located on campus. Travel and parking expenses are the employee's responsibility.
