POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor Position in Computer Science (CS), with a research focus on Artificial Intelligence or related areas, starting in the fall of 2025.

Candidates are expected to have a record of high-quality scholarship and should be able to demonstrate the potential for excellence in both research and teaching. The department values and encourages interdisciplinary research, providing a unique opportunity for collaboration across fields. We also value industry/government experience, recognizing the importance of real-world applications in research.  

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

Applicants must hold a doctorate in CS or a closely related field by the time they are hired. Successful candidates must demonstrate excellent communication skills, have the ability to establish an active research program, and be motivated to support the student-oriented culture of the department and UTEP’s Access to Excellent Higher Education mission.

ABOUT THE COLLEGE AND DEPARTMENT:

UTEP’s CS department is in the College of Engineering, along with six other academic departments. The department places great emphasis on students’ professional development and advancement through faculty mentoring and involvement in research at all stages of the students’ education. Leading companies and government agencies heavily recruit our graduates. The College of Engineering offers students interdisciplinary and industry training opportunities, study abroad programs, and other professional development opportunities. The college is consistently ranked among the top schools in the U.S. in awarding Bachelor’s degrees to Hispanics.

The CS faculty has a distinguished record of research and national leadership in professional organizations, with one of the highest research expenditures at UTEP. The CS department has 23 tenured and tenure-track faculty members and four teaching faculty. The department offers B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science, and M.S. degrees in Software Engineering and Artificial Intelligence. The department is in the process of securing final approvals to establish a B.S. degree in Artificial Intelligence with an expected starting date of Fall 2025. The BSCS undergraduate program offers concentrations in software engineering, secure cyber-systems, and data analytics. In addition, the M.S. in Software Engineering offers a concentration in secure cyber-systems. CS faculty engage in impactful research in a wide range of areas with special focus on AI, Cybersecurity, Software Engineering, Computer Systems, and Theoretical Foundations of CS. Through CS undergraduate and graduate programs, UTEP is designated as an NSA Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense, Cyber Operations, and Cybersecurity Research.

El Paso residents can also easily travel to our sister city of Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, to enjoy great food, markets and cultural events. 

El Paso is also an ideal location for people who love the outdoors, as home to one of the nation’s largest urban parks – Franklin Mountains State Park – and many options for year-round hiking, mountain biking and rock climbing. 

For sports fans, the UTEP Miners offer exciting Division I college athletics at several campus venues including Sun Bowl Stadium – where one of the oldest football bowl games takes place annually – and the Don Haskins Center arena. Southwest University Park, located a mile away in lively downtown El Paso, is home to the El Paso Chihuahuas, the Triple-A baseball affiliate of the San Diego Padres, and the El Paso Locomotive FC, a professional soccer team founded in 2019.
