POSITION:   ACADEMIC ADVISOR

LOCATION: UNIVERSITY ADVISEMENT CENTER

JOB SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Director for the University Advisement Center (UAC), the Academic Advisor provides integrative and collaborative approaches while fostering the academic and personal success of each student. Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to: advising and guiding a cohort of students by major, serving as an early alert resource, collaborating with faculty and the campus community, coordinate and schedule appointments for students within their cohort, distribute and track progress reports and provide overall follow-up services to students, collect and report required program data, monitor students' progress and follow up with students in need of support. The Advisor reports to the Director of UAC.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide early alert and academic success services for students to persevere and succeed.
  • Communicate proactively and ongoing with students, Faculty, and staff using various mediums.
  • Support students while setting personal goals and connecting desired outcomes.
  • Engage in intentional and continuous efforts to improve service to students, including strengthening internal processes and procedures.
  • Initiate contact to build sustaining professional and collaborative relationships with NJCU Colleagues and community partners.
  • Document student progress through our Civitas.
  • Follow-up, monitor and track student referrals as outlined on the Advisors written academic success plan.
  • Provide directions and support while maximizing student's college experience. Support academic success students in and out of the classroom. Connect students to campus support services.
  • Assist students with making a successful transition to NJCU.
  • Work with the faculty and various departments to create programming and events for students.
  • Instruct and facilitate freshmen seminar course(s)
  • Weekly to bi-weekly meeting with at-risk advisees and creating a contract regarding goals and purpose of education.
  • Assist in the implementation of the advising and registration of transfer students
  • Work with/supervise Peer Advisors and support them with advising student issues/questions
  • Participate in professional development and training activities. Submit proposals and present papers at regional and national conferences.
  • Other duties as required for ongoing program services.

EDUCATION: bachelors degree from an accredited college

EXPERIENCE: Two (2) years of professional experience in a institution of higher education, education or any field related to the functions of the job.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment; must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to demonstrate flexibility and work with various campus and community programs/partners; must be task and detail oriented;
  • Flexible schedule including occasional evenings and weekends.
  • Must possess excellent listening, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to work as a team member and to work independently
  • Demonstrated initiative and follow-through skills; tact, diplomacy, and judgement in dealing with students, parents, faculty, and administrators.
  • Detail oriented and demonstrated ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.

PREFERRED:

  • Master’s degree preferably in higher education, counseling, social work
  • Demonstrated knowledge of developmental academic advising methodologies.
  • Have a demonstrated sensitivity to the needs and concerns of a diverse student population
