Essential Functions
Job Summary
Provide basic skills in the maintenance and repair of automotive and maintenance equipment.
Core Responsibilities
• Responsible for performing general mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of automobiles, trucks, tractors, bulldozers, golf carts, lawn equipment, and related equipment.
• Diagnoses vehicle and equipment trouble.
• Prepares vehicles for state inspection.
• Performs scheduled vehicle preventive maintenance work, including oil changes, tires, drive belts, and filters.
• Processes automotive shop work orders through the TMA work order system.
• Drives vehicles to and from different areas within the University campuses as well as vendors off campus.
• Maintains a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
• Attends monthly safety meetings for the auto shop.
• Attends all safety/maintenance training as required.
• Promotes safe and environmental protection by immediately reporting unsafe situations, spills, and accidents; following University safety plans/procedures/protocols; and participating in appropriate safety training.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
• Valid Texas Driver's License and approval rating from the University Police Department.
• High school graduate or GED.
• One (1) year of professional experience in basic automotive maintenance repair.
• Diagnose the causes of vehicle problems and repair.
• Perform skilled repair work on automotive equipment.
• Draw up repair estimates.
• Perform maintenance services.
• Liaise with the parts department to obtain the required components.
• Carry out vehicle inspections, testing, and safety checks.
• Document and maintain records of service work carried out on vehicles.
• Maintain and organize tools, equipment, and manuals.
• Research technical manuals of vehicles to increase efficiency.
• Keep abreast of technical updates and improvements relevant to the job.
• Learn to input, access, and analyze data using a computer and adapt to technical changes.
• Knowledgeable of the hazards involved in the occupation, and the safety precautions to take.
• Ability to understand complex written and verbal instructions, and carry them out accurately.
• Perform preventive maintenance and routine servicing of equipment.
• Effectively manage work orders.
• Ability to use hand and power tools applicable to trade.
• Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with customers, colleagues, and supervisors.
• Ability to read, understand, and follow safety procedures.
• Effective oral communication and interpersonal skills.
• Basic computer skills, such as accessing the internet and e-mails.
• Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
• Meet schedules and timelines.

Working Conditions
• Automotive services environment.
• Automotive diagnostic equipment, wheel balancing equipment, tire repairing equipment, small hand tools, drill, drill press, grinder, air-powered tools, welding torch, torque wrench, jack, and lift equipment.
• Exposure to mechanical and electrical hazards, hazardous chemicals, high-pressure water and air systems, high-speed equipment, confined and awkward spaces, and enclosed vehicles such as trucks, cars, and vans.
• Exposure to variable Texas weather conditions and/or physical hazards such as working in elevated and confined spaces, and other operational areas. Exposure may be prolonged.
• Exposure to elevated levels of noise.
• Exposure to inadequate lighting conditions.
• Exposure to contaminants such as antifreeze and chemical degreasers.
• Exposure to oils and other cutting fluids.
• Required to wear Personal Protective Equipment when needed, including steel toe or non-slip shoes, eye protection, hard hat, back belt, body harness, biological protective gear, ear muffs or plugs, respirator, and arc flash protection.
Physical Demands:
• Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
• Regularly required to stand, walk, use hands to feel, reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear.
• Frequently required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, finger, grasp, feel, and/or use repetitive motions.
• Ability to work in confined spaces such as trucks, cars, and vans.
• Repetitive motions that may include the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
• Reaching overhead, at or below shoulder level.
• Operating machinery and/or power tools.
• Required to have visual acuity to perform an activity such as operating machines such as lathes, drill presses, power saws, and mills where the seeing job is at or within arm's reach; performing mechanical or skilled trades tasks of a non-repetitive nature such as ones by carpenters, technicians, service people, plumbers, painters, mechanics, etc.
This position will be primarily located on campus. Travel and parking expenses are the employee's responsibility.
