Salary Range: Up to $64,500 annualized, commensurate with education, experience, qualifications, and level.

Essential Functions

Job Summary

Provide essential, intermediate/journeyman, or advanced level technical skills dealing with the construction, installation, operation and maintenance of fire and life safety systems and their components. Responsible for installation, maintenance, modification and repair of fire alarm, fire sprinkler, fire suppression and other life safety systems.

Core Responsibilities

• Responsible for troubleshooting and correcting problems with all life safety systems to include fire detection/alarm, fire suppression systems, fire pumps, fire system troubles and fire alarm response. Also, conducts follow up investigations to determine the cause of fire system alarms and to ensure/verify the proper operation of fire and life safety systems.
• Prepares material requests and orders parts and supplies.
• Conducts self-study and attend training to maintain and improve technical proficiency in fire and life safety systems to include all applicable codes.
• Cross trains to support and assist the Utilities Station Operators and Facilities Control Technicians.
• Performs some work in Bio-Science Level 3 Labs.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
Level I

• Assists senior technicians and work independently in performing preventive and routine maintenance on campus fire detection/alarms, battery operated emergency lighting systems, and fire suppression systems to include dry pipe, wet pipe, pre-action, deluge, FM200, kitchen fire suppression, smoke evacuation, and other life safety systems.
• Assists senior technicians with the installation of fire detection and suppression system devices.
• Assists with code required maintenance, testing and inspections of campus fire and life safety systems.
• Assists in the commissioning of new and retrofitted building controls and fire systems to ensure compliance and system integrity are maintained.
Level II and III

• Performs preventive and routine maintenance on campus fire detection/alarms, battery operated emergency lighting systems, and fire suppression systems to include dry pipe, wet pipe, pre-action, deluge, FM200, kitchen fire suppression, smoke evacuation, and other life safety systems.
• Monitors and maintains the operation and integrity of fire and life safety systems.
• Installs fire detection and suppression system devices.
• Performs code required maintenance, testing and inspections of campus fire and life safety systems. Also assists and directs contractors with required fire and life safety inspections and with correcting all resulting deficiencies.
• Completes departmental reports and documentation to include gathering data through field measurements and observations, analysis and various research methods.
• Assists in the writing of standard operating procedures, process improvements, and training manuals regarding fire and life safety systems.
• Assist with developing short- and long-term departmental goals.
• Reads and interprets blue prints, schematics, and specifications to maintain functionality of campus systems, ensure compliance, and provide input for campus projects.
• Trains employees on fire and life safety systems.
• Participates in the commissioning of new and retrofitted building controls and fire systems to ensure compliance and system integrity are maintained.
Level III

• Responsible for installation, maintenance, modification and repair of fire alarm, fire sprinkler, fire suppression and other life safety systems.
• Works independently and provides direction for Fire and Life Safety Systems Technicians I and II in performing preventive and routine maintenance on campus fire detection/alarms, battery operated emergency lighting systems, and fire suppression systems to include dry pipe, wet pipe, pre-actions, deluge, FM200, kitchen fire suppression, smoke evacuation, and other life safety systems.
• Conducts quality control inspection for work completed by junior technicians and contractors.
• Provides direct supervision of Fire and Life Safety Systems Technicians I and IIs in the absence of the Facilities Controls Technicians Leader.
• Promotes safety and environmental protection by immediately reporting unsafe situations, spills, and accidents; following University safety plans/procedures/protocols; and participating in appropriate safety training.
Required Qualifications

• High school graduate or GED.
• One to six years of experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of fire alarm and/or fire suppression systems or electronics.

• An Associate's Degree in Electronics or related technical trade may be substituted for experience at the Technician I level.

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Working Knowledge with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, and Outlook).
• Knowledge and skill in the use of electronics, fire alarms, and fire suppression, multi-meter, hand tools, and related equipment.
