Essential Functions
Job Summary
The Strategic Communications Coordinator is based in the Office of University Strategic Communications and plays a crucial role in shaping and advancing UTSA's storytelling strategy at a time when the university is experiencing rapid growth. This team member works daily with writers and multimedia content creators from across the university to craft compelling stories that bring UTSA's innovations, research and community impact to life.
Core Responsibilities
• Content Development: Stays informed of local, state, national, international and university news cycles to direct the development of relevant, timely news. Works collaboratively with the public affairs and publications teams to support an integrated content strategy across the media, magazines, and news sites. Conceptualizes story ideas, thematic services and innovative storytelling approaches, and ensures the continuous flow of content by ideating with writes and multimedia creators across UTSA. Counsels content developers across the university about creative methods of packaging content to enhance the impact of storytelling, such as adding video, audio and other interactive elements to articles.
• Content Evaluation: Supports University Strategic Communications' digital storytelling on multiple platforms and investigates and evaluates story concepts that arise from a variety of sources, including university leadership, academic communicators and faculty, and community stakeholders and alumni. Establishes a clear plan for storytelling with communication peers, writers and content creators.
• Project Management: Manages the dynamic digital news site UTSA Today from conception to publication. Coordinates across departments, connects content producers, sets the editorial calendar and ensures that the content development schedule is met. In setting the editorial schedule, stays attuned to the university's priorities, evolving news cycles and the capacity of collaborators.
• Editorial Support: Reviews content submitted for University Strategic Communications' channels, ensures adherence to established voice and style, and provides constructive coaching to content producers to advance storytelling projects. Maintains high standards for research, writing, and fact-checking while ensuring editorial products align with UTSA's institutional messaging, branding and strategic priorities.
• Writing and Editing: Contributes stories to the department's communication platforms and demonstrated superlative writing and editing skills; informs the UTSA Style Guide.
• Content Connectivity, Measurement & Evaluation: Contributes to the cross-promotion of content across UTSA platforms, tracks metrics and analyzes data to optimize readership. Regularly reports key findings and makes data-drives recommendations to increase audience engagement.
• Relationship Development: Engages faculty, staff and students in the process of growing the quantity and quality of UTSA's storytelling. Builds collegiality and fosters a shared commitment to high-quality storytelling. Provides strategic counsel and coaching on writing and digital news best practices.
• Systems & Processes: Develops editorial guidelines, maintain short-term and long-term content calendars, and manages editorial workflow. Establishes and sustains efficient systems during periods of organizational change and growth and develops meaningful reports to demonstrate the department's editorial strategy and successes.
• Social Media Listening & Reporting: Supports the university's strategic messaging efforts by monitoring social media conversations. Independently ensures timely reporting of relevant topics and provides insights to minimize potential risks.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in Communications, English, Journalism, Public Relations, Marketing, Information Systems, or a related field from an accredited institution.
• Five (5) years of experience in public relations, communications, writing/editing, marketing, web publishing, or a related field.
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience in a higher education, government, or nonprofit environment.
Knowledge Skills & Abilities
• Excellent writing, communication, organizational and interpersonal skills.
• Demonstrates a strong understanding of news and how to develop sources as well as research, writing and fact-checking skills.
• Proactively pursues professional growth, learns from experience and applies lessons to improve systems and projects.
• Proven experience managing multiple projects, prioritizing tasks independently and meeting deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
• Organizes workflow efficiently, manages time effectively and keeps files, drafts and emails well-organized.
• Strong working ability in Microsoft Office Suite; ideally would have some experience with Google Analytics, project management systems, content management systems and SEO best practices.
• Demonstrates a strong ability to assess situations holistically and weigh opportunities against risks while considering institutional priorities, stakeholders and environmental factors.
• Exercises sound judgment, emotional intelligence, discretion and professionalism in handling sensitive information.
• Deep understanding of organizational branding and its role in storytelling.
• Ability to model adaptability during periods of change and growth, evolve strategies and systems as needed, and creatively solve complex problems.

Working Environment:
• Office environment.
• Ability to travel to and from meetings, training sessions, or other business-related events.
• Occasional after-hours and weekend work or overtime may be required.
Physical Demands:
• Sedentary work; sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required, only occasionally.
• Exerts up to 10 lbs. of force occasionally.
This position will be primarily located on campus (with the flexibility to work remotely portions of each week). Travel and parking expenses are the employee's responsibility.
