CIDD Background

The Center for Innovative Drug Discovery (CIDD) provides capabilities and core services in support of biomedical research related to drug discovery. The CIDD medicinal chemistry core facility, Pre-Clinical Pharmacology Core (PPC) at UTSA focus on employing pharmaceutical level medicinal chemistry research strategies, innovations and technology-driven synthesis techniques to help quickly identify and optimize the properties of small molecules to characterize and advance unique biological targets for drug action. The ultimate intent of the CIDD is to provide an array of core facilities and expertise to facilitate the translation of basic scientific discoveries into tangible pre-clinical candidate drugs that can be further developed into clinical therapies for human disease. Essential Functions

The Assistant Professor of Research in the CIDD will be a non-tenure track faculty position responsible for the day-to-day management of science and research programs in the CIDD PPC, as well as oversee and manage all CIDD staff laboratory personnel working in the CIDD PPC. The position will oversee all CIDD collaborations, PPC active programs and contract work to ensure high-quality science and deliverables are maintained, and client expectations are managed. The position will also be expected to write grant proposals as the primary investigator, including large center-based extramural funding opportunities. The position will also be responsible for advertising the CIDD PPC capabilities to expand the client base and generate new funding opportunities. The position will work collaboratively with the other CIDD core facilities, CIDD leadership and the CIDD steering committee. The position will also be responsible for managing CIDD program budgets and contract budgets, as well as working with the UTSA COS business service center, the UTSA business contracts group and UTSA research service centers.

Required Qualifications

• Ph.D. in organic chemistry with additional experience/education in pharmacology, enzymology or related field.
• Previous experience in establishing and executing in vitro ADME assays such as microsomal/hepatocyte clearance, MDR/MDCK and CACO2 permeability, Cyp450 inhibition, Ames and cardiovascular safety assays (i.e. HERG, Nav 1.5, etc.).
• Previous experience in planning and executing multiple species animal studies.
• Previous experience in metabolite ID with HPLC and HPLC/MS.
• >5 years of experience in contract, service-oriented pharmacology drug discovery research.
• Previous experience in managing MSc and Ph.D. -level scientific staff.
• Previous experience in managing program budgets and resource allocations.
• A strong fundamental understanding of drug-discovery related pharmacology, including in vitro ADME assays, toxicity assays, as well as physical chemical property assays and in vivo animal studies in characterizing pharmacokinetics/drug exposure.
• A strong track record of highly productive synthesis research (publications, poster presentations and/or patents), independent problem solving and project leadership.
• Experience with modern in vitro pharmacology lab techniques, as well as experience in establishing in vivo animal studies and IUCAC protocols.
• Experience with organic compound analysis and characterization via HPLC and HPLC/MS.
• Efficient time management and record keeping and strong communication skills for CIDD-client interactions.
• Experience in managing pharmacology lab personnel.
• This position requires the ability to maintain the security and integrity of UTSA and its infrastructure.

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous experience with the UTSA business contracts, business service centers and research service centers.
• Previous experience with writing collaborative, state and federal grant applications.
