Essential Functions
Job Summary
The Social Media Manager, based in the Office of University Strategic Communications, leads the develoment and execution of UTSA's social media strategy. This role is key to advancing the university's storytelling during a peiod of rapid growth, overseeing content creation and daily operations to enhance UTSA's brand, reputation, and messaging.
The ideal candidate will be a seasoned social media professional with laser-sharp writing skills who has the ability to think strategically about the vision of the university while managing multiple projects in a dynamic digital media environment. With a particular focus on the university's flagship mailto:(@UTSA) social media presence, this manager will drive engagement with and build affinity for UTSA.
Core Responsibilities
• Management: Recruits, manages, mentors, and evaluates digital engagement staff, student workers, and interns in the production and curation of content to advance the strategic goals of University Strategic Communications. Manages assignments and editorial calendar of social media content for the university's central channels. Ensures a steady flow of innovative content of the highest caliber, achieving key metrics for reach, engagement, and shareability. Employs sound editorial judgment to shape public perception and develop a broad community of support for UTSA.
• Strategy: Creates and implements a comprehensive social media strategy for UTSA, collaborating closely with the department's media relations, editorial, publications, internal communication, and messaging teams. Stays up-to-date on new social media technologies and trends. Recommends content strategies and KPIs for distinct social media channels while seeking opportunities to improve social media outreach to key audiences. Assists communicators across campus in their efforts to align with the central strategy and pursue best practices.
• Collaboration: Works with colleagues across campus to ensure that their social media strategy is aligned with the central strategy. Works collaboratively within and outside University Strategic Communications to continually encourage alignment of strategy across the university, from project inception to completion. Provides event-related social media support.
• Leadership: Leads UTSA social media during crises and issues. Works with issues management and crisis communication leads to preparing and implementing social media plans for crises. Monitors and responds to issues regularly working closely with CCO, department lead, and unit leads across campus.
• Counsel: Develops case studies of best practices regularly to share real-world success stories that are actionable across campus. Counsels UTSA faculty and staff on social media best practices, strategies and tactics.
• Metrics: Works closely with the university's SEO analysts to monitor, measure, and report on social media, including KPIs for main social channels, and serves as a campus leader on social media metrics. Ensures time-sensitive monitoring and reporting of crises, issues, and breaking news. Provides regular updates to internal clients reporting on social performance, outcomes delivered, and opportunities to further optimize.
• Produces branded images, infographics, and video to use on UTSA's social media channels and websites.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in Communication, Journalism, Public Relations, English, Marketing, Business, or a related field is required.
• Five (5) years of combined experience in journalism, communications, marketing, public relations, or a closely related field, including a minimum of one (1) year of social media supervisory experience.
• Experience in the development of social media and multimedia content for targeted audiences.
• This position requires the ability to maintain the security and integrity of UTSA and its infrastructure.
Preferred Qualifications
• Social media experience at an agency or higher education institution.
• Working knowledge of desktop publishing, design, and website maintenance software/tools.
• Bilingual in Spanish.
Knowledge Skills & Abilities
• Demonstrated experience in the development and implementation of Web, multimedia and social media strategies, including measurement and evaluation.
• The ability to successfully and independently plan and manage projects at the strategic and operational levels, within prescribed deadlines.
• Tact, discretion, and the ability to maintain confidentiality when required.
• Exceptional judgment and creativity.
• Strong interpersonal skills and a keen sense of excellent customer service.
• An understanding of institutional branding and reputation management, as well as their importance.
• In-depth knowledge of social media principles, best practices, and algorithms.
• Proven proficiency in writing and editing, particularly within omnichannel media platforms, to attract and engage audiences.
• Ability to analyze, compare, and evaluate various courses of action required in decision-making.
• Strong leadership and a high degree of independence while still functioning within a team-oriented environment.
• Excellent interpersonal skills (credible, cooperative, and supportive); ability to build trust and cooperation with key stakeholders including members of the university's executive leadership and faculty and representatives of the news media.
• Ability to multitask and prioritize deadlines, meetings, training sessions, or other business-related events.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Creative Suite.

Working Conditions
Working Environment:
• Office environment.
• Ability to travel to and from meetings, training sessions, or other business-related events.
• Workdays, areas, and work hours may vary based on the needs of the department.
Physical Demands:
• Sedentary work; sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and stand are required, only occasionally.
• Exerting up to 10 lbs. of force occasionally.
This position will require working both remotely in Texas and on campus (approximately five or more days on campus per month). Travel and parking expenses are the employee's responsibility. Applicants must be adaptable and open to working in both environments.
