Essential Functions:

The Campus Safety Monitor / Student Support Assistant provides customer service, student assistance, general campus monitoring, and observation-only safety oversight across campus facilities. This role does not perform security services as defined by the Texas Occupations Code Chapter 1702, and duties are strictly limited to observation and reporting, student engagement, and support tasks.

The position enhances the campus experience by offering a friendly presence, assisting students and visitors, identifying facility or safety concerns, and notifying appropriate departments when issues arise.

Compliance Statement

Duties are limited to observation, reporting, and general student assistance.
The position does not involve enforcement actions, protective services, or any responsibilities requiring a Texas private security license.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

Key Responsibilities (Observation, Reporting & Student Support Only)

Observation & Reporting (Non-Security Functions)

  • Observe campus areas for maintenance issues, safety hazards, facility concerns, or wellbeing needs, and promptly report them to the appropriate college department.
  • Provide a visible, friendly presence that supports campus comfort and community engagement—not for crime deterrence or enforcement.
  • Monitor foot traffic in public areas to support campus operations and student flow.
  • Report incidents, emergencies, or suspicious conditions immediately to Campus Police or emergency services according to established protocols.

Student & Visitor Assistance

  • Provide directions, general information, and wayfinding support to students, staff, and visitors.
  • Assist students in locating classrooms, offices, events, and college services.
  • Support student wellbeing by being approachable, helpful, and resource-oriented.

Campus Operations Support

  • Assist with opening/closing common areas when appropriate (non-security related).
  • Support event setups by providing information, helping with foot traffic flow, or relaying facility needs.
  • Complete daily observation logs documenting facility concerns, safety issues, and general campus activity.

Prohibited Duties (To Maintain Compliance with Texas Law)

Employees in this role may NOT:

  • Detain, restrain, or physically intervene with individuals.
  • Conduct investigations, searches, or enforcement actions.
  • Provide protection of persons or property, act to prevent theft, or perform crime-deterrence activities.
  • Carry weapons or represent themselves as security, law enforcement, or protective personnel.
  • Patrol with intent to prevent crime or provide security services.
  • Respond to violent or criminal incidents beyond calling the appropriate authorities.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Strong interpersonal and customer-service skills.
  • Ability to observe and report conditions accurately.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with students, staff, and campus police.
  • Comfort walking throughout campus and being present in indoor/outdoor environments.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Associate’s degree from an accredited institution. Safety or Security experience.
Supplemental Information
Travel Requirements:

Travel to other CBC sites, training sites, and conferences may be required.

Environment:
  • Indoor and outdoor campus areas, including common areas, academic buildings, residence halls (if applicable), and event spaces.
  • Frequent interaction with students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
